Wow, this passing struck me hard in so many unexpected ways. I've always appreciated Charlie's understated elegance, dapper ways, and jazz sensibilities - but (after days re-immersed in Stones music with my ears focused on the drums) I have such admiration and respect (adoration?) for the ways he drove the band.
The evidence is clear that the Stones knew that Charlie was their Special Sauce: As Keith Richards said in 1979: “Everybody thinks Mick and Keith are the Rolling Stones. If Charlie wasn’t doing what he’s doing on drums, that wouldn’t be true at all. You’d find out that Charlie Watts is the Stones.”
All those years of dancing wasn't "dancing to the Stones" - it was dancing to Charlie Watts!
And yes, without a doubt, "the world could use a [great] drummer right about now."
Yes, I think you're in good company, Greg, feeling that loss. Loosing him is good example of 'you don't know good you got it 'til it's gone.'
I heard a funny story that accurately portrays Charlie Watts. Watts get woken by a drunken call from Mick Jagger in his hotel room. Jagger says, "Where's my drummer? Get down here to the bar!" Watts then takes a shower, shaves, puts on a suit, shines his shoes, and walks downstairs to the bar. He eyes Jagger, walks up to him, punches him, and says, "Don't ever call me YOUR drummer. You are MY singer."
Thanks for taking the time to offer your thoughts! 🙏🏼
I will take away two insights from this article: 1) people bringing children into this world are exasperating global warming, nobody could have predicted that and 2) my trumpet playing sucked… predictable without complex math. Thanks Bradley for the article.
Thanks, Hot lips! On number 1) It depends on what, and how much, they consume. But definitely very few carbon neutral or negative families out there. 2) Your trumpet playing was stellar, Lover Man. But your singing and dancing took a bit of quantum mechanics. Though not as much as Sander.
