First kudos for seeking colleges that align to your kid’s affinity.

Second, prescriptions that separate art /science - spiritual / physical have always been hard for me to swallow. I need both to experience wholistic health.

Third- on the topic of drawing. I love the evolution of the ability to draw as a record that allowed for advancement. As my “making art” evolves more into the less literal non-representational, I wonder if the expression informs future generations more or less?

As always, thanks for content that ignites thinking!

Thanks, John. You embody a good example of the blending of arts and science…and there is a spiritual element to your ‘conversations with trees’! I appreciate E. O. Wilson’s perspective on the importance of consilience and applaud him for elevating the status of the visual arts within it.

I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t wish they could draw (they can) and yet it’s considered an ‘elective’. My grandmother was a small town school teacher who insisted every one of her students learn to read, write, ‘rithmatic…and draw. It’s elemental to who we are as humans.

Love that your grandmother equates drawing as a peer with writing. I would have benefited from being a student of hers ✍️❤️

As long as you behaved yourself. For her retirement gift, all the other teachers signed her paddle…which she proudly hung on her wall! 😳
