Great piece. Interesting about the dopamine, I used to drive fast when I was younger but now drive slow mainly to save petrol. Trying to enjoy the journey, not focusing on getting to the destination! In fact I've definitely noticed many more people driving slower on the motorway. I would use the bus if there was more than one a day from our village. I'd use the train if it wasn't double the cost of driving.

Thanks for commenting, Carol!

Perhaps you're brain is now rewarded by joy of the journey! Bummer you don't have more transit options. Less populated, under served areas are indeed a challenge for transportation authorities. So many regions take a rational economic approach to balancing the transportation budget, but those models don't account for human need. Long-term care costs are rarely economically rational, but that doesn't mean they can be ignored. Caring about long-term sustainable mobility, for all residents, is a form of long-term care.

I wish there was more experimentation with on-demand and shared use transit services. Denmark is trying. https://learn.sharedusemobilitycenter.org/overview/flexdanmark-denmark-2020/ There are also cooperatives emerging that emulate Uber and Lyft but run by the community as a service to themselves. http://ridesharecooperative.com/drivers.php
